My 16 year old niece is suffering from the worst bout of menstrual cramps she has ever had. Do you have any "home remedies” (other than Midol and other cramp medication) which are effective in battling the cramps?
She is currently holding an icepack on her stomach to gain some relief.
You help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for some wonderful answers. I have incorported them for her so that she is using a heating pad and she has her feet warm. I tlkd her about drinking hot herbal teas and also about placing the heating pad (nno hot water bottle available) under her abdomin. She is in her room now and appears to have relief.
There were so many wonderful answers that I feel bad not being able to give eachof you 10 points. I can only award one "best answer" although several qualified. The best I can do is vote for one and then read the best answers the rest of you have given to other questions and give thumbs up where applicable.
Thank you again!

Try a heating pad or hot shower, I have always felt warmth has helped me. I really hope she feels better, I just went through the cramp thing yesterday.

noooo tell her she should keep it warm not cold.. fill a hot-water bottle and hold it instead.. take a paracetamol and after half an hour everything is ok.. So did I when I had cramps but after taking the pill the pain was gone.. since then I even do not realize that I have my period.. the pill is magic..

Heating pads are a godsend when I have cramps. I also find that exercise helps. I never really feel like exercising when I have cramps, but I always feel much better after I do.

A heating pad or a hot bath will work better. She may be having blood clots. If she's old enough for aspirin it helps to dissolve them. Ask her doctor.

Exercise actually works. Heating pads give relief as well. Ice packs are for swelling for injuries, heating pads are for muscles (like the uterus)

She shouldn't use ice, tell her to use a hot water bottle instead, peppermint tea helps with the cramps too.
