To be frank, man, August is not a good time to visit the Philippines. The rainy season, which started in June, is in full force, and will last till Oct or Nov. The best time to savor the Philippines is from February to May, which is summertime. Same goes with Thailand. However, if you're a shopaholic or a sucker for super cheap goods (and nice imitations too), June to August in Bangkok and Hong Kong is Great Sale Period.

Philippines in August is still good except for the rain. You have a lot of to do's here. You can visit the historical sites and even frolic on the beach if the sun is out. You have 7,100 island to choose from. Cruising in Thailand is also good. But, do not forget Bangkok. I have gone there, the temples are excellent and it has a touch of truly Asia and Amazing Thailand.

It is always unsafe to visit the Phils; better to take a company of US Marines with you for protection. There are so many thieves there armed to the teeth with guns and knives. But Thailand is precious jewel. Cruising wud be difficult, however, without a boat. Yes, a boat is highly recommended for cruising there.
Just go straight to Pattaya and head to the go-go bars.

i think its better to put it off till later as August is basically a very wet month. I remember, with so much fondness ; ) having to wade through the murky floodwaters of Manila that very month from my university to my house (more than a decade ago)...ohhh I miss Philippines!?! But if you're in to adventure...go ahead dear!!! I love Philippines...postpone but DONT cancel....

Come to the Philippines. Shopping, beaches, decent girls, English speakers. Forget those countries with lots hookers everywhere, terrible traffic jams, etc.

Depending on what country you're from, in the US, you can go to a government website that advises tourists about potential problems.
