the best thing is go to body shop get two bottles of teatree oil ..put first bottle on neat on head leave till lice are dead ..(an hour)..then put shampoo straight on to wash out and then loads of conditioner ...comb out dead nits ........once done add about two cap fulls to every bottle of shampoo and conditioner you buy from then on it will keep thwm away................................this is the only effective method ..unless you have neem leaves in garden they work the same way just make them in to a pulp..

For a really stubborn case of what I called mutant head lice: Use vegetable oil with 5 drops each tea tree oil, lavender oil and peppermint oil, put a shower cap over the head, or wrap it in saran wrap. Be sure to wrap your bedpillow in a trashbag and a clean pillowcase (to protect the pillow and smother the lice inside it) and sleep with that overnight. The next morning, washed my hair with dish soap and repeat the entire process in a week. I used Lysol spray daily on the upholstered furniture and used flea spray for lice as directed and finally got rid of the nasty infestation I had picked up from who knows where. The trick is to check and make sure you are getting the "p" chemical that is also in the lice spray. Tea tree oil stinks to high heaven, we call tea tree oil boyfriend repellent at my house. I work with homeless and have gotten nasty cases before. The rid and the nix work on the immediate problem of live lice and the itching, but they don't have enough poison to do a normal head of hair more than once. You will end up buying a dozen kits by the time you do everyone in the household. From experience, try the tea tree oil. Available at walmart in the pharmacy for about $3 a bottle. Lavender and peppermint oil are at the natural food shop.
For spraying the house, you can use flea spray, it is a little bit cheaper and comes in a bigger can. That tiny can of lice spray makes you feel like you have to hold back when it comes to spraying the furniture. The trick there is SATURATION. Also, vacuum everything constantly for about two weeks. Bag up all stuffed animals and toys, wash everything every other day in hot water, bedding, pillows etc.
I hope this helped. Anyone who works with the homeless gets exposed, and I have had more than my share. This works.
Excerpts of this answer were copied from my sister's answer to someone else on Yahoo answers. She was the wizard who developed the oil for me when we had our problem with the worst case ever. I douldn't get them kidlled with the normal lice stuff, they were mutant and struggled to live even after the rid and nix treatments.
I am not a dirty person, and contrary to popular conception, Lice like clean people and clean hair. They can't cling to dirty hair. The natural oils in your scalp are detrimental to the glue that holds the egg to the hair shaft.

I hate nits.my kids are now left primary school, and left the beasts behind.one of the worst problems I found was when I cleaned my kids hair, they would go to school and come home that night re-loaded.A lot of the other mothers were too lazy to clean their kids hair. Thus an ever continual cycle.I suggested to the teacher that she send a letter out to all the parents to clean their childrens heads all on the same night. This worked fantastically.
Over the counter treatment,it is scientifically proven that these rampant nits are immune,or almost immune to treatment.
I found any type of conditioner,it could be the cheapest and biggest bottle from the supermarket.Put loads and loads on and the nits slide out with the comb. Its like they are drunk.Tea tree is a help too,but it stinks and the other classmates smell it.If by any chance you get nit eggs stuck you have to hand pick them out.happy hunting!!

VINEGAR 1st on scalp, then the conditioner (a cheap one with T-tree one great), then COMB every 2 days
also can buy or make a deterrent spray of
lavender, rosemary and tea tree oils + alcohol
but basically you are doomed to keep checking for years unless you kick up an almighty fuss at the local school(s)

I think my dad used Tea Tree Conditoner (Albertos I think), slapped it all over the kids head really thick and even put a towel or something over the head.
This is too slippery for them and you should then comb them out. Tea Tree is a very strong cleanser also. Do this every day for about 2 weeks.

I understand completely i had this problem with my eldest she kept repeatedly bringing them home. Basically i have cured it i used a new over the counter solution called hedrin it works straight away and the nits and lice just fall out. you don't even have to comb at all it's a miracle. since using we have been lice free completely!

Its a nightmare!
O i do empathise.
Sadly.....combing everyday with conditioner is the only thing that worked for me and bleieve me I tried evrything.
3 weeks of wet combing with conditiner was the only thing that worked. No matter what you use it oeesnt kill evrything and egss re- hatch 2-3 weeks after the treatment. You just have to do it.
Me and my daughter would choose music or a DVd to watch each night and settle down together, we tried to turn it into a bonding thing as she said, wow mom no one else loves me enough to pull nits out of head every night!
Good luck.

when i had lice my mom washed my hair with kerosene.
i've also heard that if you spread mayo on the whole head and leave it on for a couple hours before washing out it kills the lice because oxygen can't get through. i've never tried it and it might be too messy for small children.

Vaseline works really well. It smothers them. Your kids might look kinda greasy for a while though. You need to coat it at the roots with the vaseline for 3-4 weeks.
