Its probably because of the hose pipe ban, but that still don't stop the housemates from constantly running water in the kitchen and taking baths instead of showers when it is not neccesary. The grass looks really bad, when they first entered the house, it was lovely, healthy green grass, but now it looks like shite. I think next year they should try and think of a different type of garden, more easy maintenance, also it must be really difficult to lay on comfortably

It's all down to the weather my friend - there has not been enough rain. At the same time it is getting a lot of use. These two factors (heavy use and no water) contribute to the brown effect...
It will come back at some point, in effect it is hibernating to survive!

Because there is a hose-pipe ban down south and the housemates don't water the garden (they could use second hand water or something?)

Because in London we have a drought order and no water can be used on the gardens, even the queens garden is dry and dead.
