What are the benefits of mature street trees (planes, maples, limes etc)?

I know it seems a dumb question on the face of it, but think about it and explore the drivers behind your gut reaction. Equally, it doesn't have to be a positive reaction.

They are more capable of absorbing vehicle exhaust fumes, provide homes for small animals and birds, provide shade/shelter for animals and humans, as well providing some to talk about/look at in school and on this website.
