Meditation
Sleep disturbances are often due to worries and anxieties that keep the mind agitated at night. To help eliminate those anxieties, meditate for a while before going to sleep.
Sit comfortably on your bed and put your attention on the "third eye" (the area on your forehead between your eyebrows).
Follow your breath in and out, or do the traditional So-Hum meditation: Inhale while thinking the syllable "So" and exhale with "Hum."
Lie on your back. Watch your breath, and continue the So-Hum meditation, focusing your mind gently on the "third eye." You will sleep like a child.
Repeat or chant soothing mantras and affirmations, such as "I sleep properly," in the morning and evening. This reduces the anxiety and fear that can interfere with normal sleeping habits.
Other forms of meditation, including the use of visualization and aromatherapy (essential oils of sandalwood, chamomile, jasmine or rose), can also be effective.
Ayurvedic breathing exercise for insomnia
Lie down in bed with the light off and allow yourself to fall asleep while doing the following breathing exercises.
Focus on deep regular breathing for a few seconds.
Give thanks for all the joys, experiences, even the trials of your day.
Keeping an awareness of your breath, get into your most comfortable sleeping position.
If you feel restless, just acknowledge that this excess energy will pass.
Continue to breathe slowly and deeply. Try to imagine what your body feels like when it is in a deep relaxing sleep and allow yourself to drift into that sleepy state.
If you wake in the night, do not get agitated, simply repeat the exercise

Sleeping pills are habit forming. Not sleeping is unhealthy. You may be suffering from clinical depression and or an anxiety disorder. Best bet is to seek professional help. Losing a parent or any family member can add to everyday life stresses and offset your well being.
Perhaps you have unanswered questions that are troubling you. Perhaps you are not through mourning. (Again, assuming you have had this problem brought on "after" the passing of your father). It's good you are looking for help, and it is my belief that a visit to a professional who can help you would be in your best interest. Good luck

I am so sorry to hear the loss of your beloved dad. I can understand how you feel as I felt hopeless when I lost my grandma. I yet to get over her demise for 5 years now. But life has to go on...... One good thing you can do is to excersie and sweat a lot. Later in the night you will go into a slumber as your body has excreted the toxic that was accumulated in your body for a while. Our mood will cause our body to produce some kind of enzyme thus also cause you to have poor sleep. Try watching some comedy movies and laugh alot as laughing will also help you to produce another healthy cell.

Maybe you should talk to someone about your loss. It's very common to have problems sleeping or concentrating when you lose someone so close to you. Having someone to talk to will help ease your mind. A non-addictive way to catch some sleep would be Benadryl. Otherwise, you would have to talk to your MD and most sleep medications carry a risk of dependency. Good Luck.

i know about parent loss hon i lost my mom 3 years ago nd it hurts like hell call your local berevment counceling they might even come to your home and get lots of counceling they also have group counceling for ppl in your catagory. i know this is morbid but going to the cemetary and taking to your ddd's grave will help a lot, talk to him cry, get angry whatever emotion all these suggestions will help you heal and put closure on this but anyone who tells you to move on and forget is not worth your time. you and you alone knows when the healing will begin and when the time to really say goodbye. good luck to you i know exactally how you feel
