are giant stag beetles bad?

I have a nest of, what I beleive to be, the "giant stag beetle" living in an old tree stump in my back yard. They look very scary. Do I need to exterminate them?

Please! A little less of the beetlist comments. Like every species (including humans I may add) most of us beetles are caring and generous individuals. The criminal minority just make life difficult for all the garden insects.
