0 is the integer that precedes the positive 1, and follows −1. In most (if not all) numerical systems, 0 was identified before the idea of 'negative integers' was accepted.
Zero is an integer which quantifies a count or an amount of null size; that is, if the number of your brothers is zero, that means the same thing as having no brothers, and if something has a weight of zero, it has no weight. If the difference between the number of pieces in two piles is zero, it means the two piles have an equal number of pieces. Before counting starts, the result can be assumed to be zero; that is the number of items counted before you count the first item and counting the first item brings the result to one. And if there are no items to be counted, zero remains the final result.
While mathematicians all accept zero as a number, some non-mathematicians would say that zero is not a number, arguing one cannot have zero of something. Others hold that if you have a bank balance of zero, you have a specific quantity of money in your account, namely none. It is that latter view which is accepted by mathematicians and most others.
Almost all historians omit the year zero from the proleptic Gregorian and Julian calendars, but astronomers include it in these same calendars. However, the phrase Year Zero may be used to describe any event considered so significant that it virtually starts a new time reckoning.

Any math teacher will tell you, Zeros have no value... they're just place holders.
That's also my favorite comment about some officers, also known as zeros.
ADDITIONAL COMMENT
K.J. Jeyabaskaran K's Q&A, I hate to rain on your parade, but division by zero is undefined... at least in normal, real world nombers. If a/b=c then c*b=a (not my rule, just the way it is). According to your #4 any number, let's say 5, divided by zero equals infinity. Therefore, since a=5, b=0 and c=infinity, it must also be true that infinity times 0 equals 5. Nope, that contradicts rule #5 (which is true) of anything times 0 equals 0. It would be great though if somehow you could divide $1 into however many parts and get an ifinite amount of money! Too bad it doesn't work.

Zero can mean different things in different situations. Zero can also allow us to solve problems, which cannot be solved without this number. Sometimes zero means nothing and sometime it means everything. Sometimes having zero in a number is not important, but sometimes, the whole meaning of a number changes if we remove zero.

Now a days, in digital method of display, all numbers can be displayed at one place just by making a rectangle representing zero. Besides, zero represents the whole universe where the God dwells likewise the soul is inside the body. God takes care the entire universe and so also ZERO takes care the entire mathematics.

Zero is not really that important now. It was important earlier because it made math much easier acting as a placeholder.
With computers, we can easily use, if we want, the roman numerals as well as any other numerals.

1. Placement of ZERO in a number, varies significantly the values of any number.
2. Any empty nature of decimal point of a number is represented by ZERO.
3. ZERO does not have value but it gives value to any number based on its position.
4. ZERO is the only number which can make any number in to infinitive. eg. 1/0 = infinitive, 10000000/0 = infinitive.
5. ZERO is the only number which can make any number valueless. eg. 1x0 = 0, 10000 x 0 = 0.
6. Totally, ZERO is the HERO in mathematics.

First of all,A big applause for the QUESTIONAIRE......
This is one of the most important question that I am waiting ever since i joined Yahoo!Answers...
To my point of view..
I think....that...
"ZERO" is THE MOST VITAL NUMBER that decides the FATE of "MATHS" ! ! !
apart from all the nos (-inf to +inf), ZERO is the most imp..
Zero hasno value only when it comes b4 a no.. but not when it comes after a no...
like 50000000 Rs.... (!!!!img if zeroes has no value!!!!)
And also....
ZERO is an Even Number..... bcoz it is in between 2 odd's
-1 "0" 1.....
so ...
Without zero no maths...
Without maths no life...

without zero there wouldnt be an inverse for addition. This means that equations like : x+7 = 0 do not have a solution. same story for 1 , if there isnt a 1 there then equations like 7x = 1 wouldnt have a solution.

you wouldn't have an answer for your math problem. There got to be an absolute or a right and wrong answers. Zero helps solve the problem.

0 is nothing. It’s pretty hard core, the Greeks couldn’t even deal with the absents of a number, it was the Aztecs that first dealt with 0.
In a way zero is no number, the lack of number.
But if you think about it, zero is all of the numbers put together.
