Perhaps it's because of an insecurity you have with yourself. You may be afraid to face the reality of the situation, or feel uncomfortable with it, so you kid yourself to make things easier. Only you know the answer to that. Without going into detail about what you are kidding yourself about, you may not get the answers you are looking for.
