The HPV virus is contracted through gential and anal sex. It produces virtually no symptoms whatsoever and you might not have the warts for a long while. In women it is the number one cause of cervical cancer. There is (is to be) a new vaccine called Gardasil *sp?* to prevent it. Men and women alike can get HPV, which causes these warts.

Just like anything else - unprotected sex and exposure. They are contracted a lot like herpes; they could be there even if you don't see them.
