Warts are a virus, they're spread by contact. Get them removed because there is an association between genital wart and cervical cancer.

The HPV virus is contracted through gential and anal sex. It produces virtually no symptoms whatsoever and you might not have the warts for a long while. In women it is the number one cause of cervical cancer. There is (is to be) a new vaccine called Gardasil *sp?* to prevent it. Men and women alike can get HPV, which causes these warts.

Just like anything else - unprotected sex and exposure. They are contracted a lot like herpes; they could be there even if you don't see them.
