They want him to be considered a "black leader" because he articulates (all be it poorly) the agenda they support.
His irrelevance is due to a rise in conservatism in the black community and more than a few who articulate well.

Jesse Jackson is not irrelevant to modern society. He has helped so many people in this country and in other countries. He helped the soldiers that were in Kosov become free back in 1999, the young lady that was involved in that Duke case, he paid her college tuition. When Detroit was rioting back in 2004 he went there to make peace amongst the communities and the police. Should I go on. Now here's a question for you, WHY IS IT THAT GEORGE W. BUSH GET AIRTIME TO SAY STUPID THINGS, SUCH AS, MAKE FUN OF HOW DUMB HE REALLY IS, AND WHY WON'T HE SIGN THE VOTER'S RIGHTS ACT OF 1965? So before you go trying to put down Jesse Jackson think of the dumb people who actually take up precious airtime.
