It's as safe traditional medicine. Both have potential side effects and both have benefits. In either case, you have to be an informed consumer. Know the pros and cons of what you are taking/having done to you. Choose your practitioner carefully and tell them what you are doing -- both traditional and nontraditional -- so they can make an informed recommendation that is less likely to have interactions.

It depends on what variety. I've used accupuncture and herbal treatments to much greater benefit than any pharmaceutical remedies I've used. However, some "Alternative Medicine" is more witch-doctory, and some of it can be very dangerous. In general, stay away from things that are too good to be true or outrageously expensive. If you are looking into any alternative medicine, you should do it under the careful guidance of your own doctor, or a doctor of alternative medicine. Never self medicate! Some herbs can have harmful interactions with each other, and with more mainstream medications you may be on.

In general, alternative medicine is very safe if you stay away from the "Snake Oil" variety peddlers.

I keep healthy with chiropractic adjustments and herbal/naturopathic remedies. It's been working for years and I've never been healthier in my life! I used to get sick all the time, but now if I start feeling icky I have herbs to turn to and then I run to my chiropractor to get adjusted. The next day I'll feel much, much better or be back to normal. And people say there are no miracle cures! BAH!

There are things to watch for and go cautiously into some of the things that are different. You have to take an active role in learning what works and doesn't work for you. You also have to do a lot of reading to understand how these things work. It's fascinating (to me) so since you're asking, it might interest you to learn more.

Hi! I am a Reiki practitioner and an Herbalist, and I have to agree with the people who say you should find a reputable practitioner. I would also caution you to be honest about what you are already taking when you go to see any doctor, either allopathic or natural - there are some herbs and medications that just don't mix. However, I find herbal and natural remedies to be the best ones around. I have been able to drop my children's medication dosage with herbal remedies, and hopefully they will be off them soon. I have also had wonderful results with both Reiki and herbal remedies with my clients. Sometimes, they are miraculous, I have to agree with the other poster. I am at windstarhealing.com if you have any questions.
