It is just one of those things that the English language has a 4foot explanation for. Like the words know , now, no. This language is very confusing. I always wondered why so many rules and broken rules.

Because it's from Latin, and Latin used a lot of suffixes and prefixes, usually more than one in a word. (I've recently learned that English used to be a language like that, about 500-600 years ago (and before). The English words 'brief', 'brevity' are from the same root.
