They wait until the last minute to bid. When you're bidding on something, make sure you're at the page during the last 5 minutes of bidding. Just keep hitting the Refresh button on your browser so that you can see if you've been outbid.

Because they're sneaky... I'm guilty of it myself. You open up two different windows. You have your highest bid in and ready to confirm in one window. In the other you keep refreshing the page until there's just a few seconds left. Then you confirm your bid and *BAM* you sniped the person.
