It is a quick, catchy interesting pitch on your business idea that could be told in an elevator if you had someone who stepped into the elevator with you and said let hear your idea before I get off. So it is quick to the point and grabs them cause an elevator ride is short.

An elevator pitch is a 30 second pitch to enable you to make a great first impression. an elevator pitch could be used to promote your company, a product, or yourself. You can actually have several elevator pitches prepared depending on who it is you are meeting. First and foremost an elevator pitch should never sound like a pitch. It should be rehearsed so much that it sounds natural. Before you start decide on the purpose of your pitch, what are you trying to achieve. Also avoid using terminology that takes away your point of difference. For example don't say I am a "Job Title" You instantly turn the audience brain off. As when they know the job title they will feel they know what you do and so stop listening. So be creative and describe what you do making sure they understand your point of difference. If you would like to really make a great elevator pitch you will find a great template here

Typically used to describe the informal Business Plan summary that a startup puts forward for the consideration of a Venture Capitalist. Since there are tons of ideas and SO little time, the shortest and yet most attention-grabbing presentation could be what gets your foot-in-the door! However every pitch has to be backed up by a detailed business plan and if you haven;t got your act together in that one... you could be given the shaft! ;-)
