I have Dr Miriam Stoppard's "Conception, Pregnancy and Birth" book. Whilst I find her style of writing good, I don't find it an in-depth and thorough as it could be. I am guessing that as her "Baby Care" book is of about the same size as the book I have, that it also misses a lot of information.
My favourite book for early childcare is "What to expect, the first year", by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway. It's an absolute godsend. I would totally recommend it to anybody interested in babies. It has the most information of all the books I have looked at, and that is a lot!
"For every parent of a newborn baby the first rush of tenderness is quickly followed by the first rush of concern. How will I cope? Is he normal? Why is she crying? What if he's sick? Why won't she sleep?
Even if the worrying never stops, the first twelve months can be made much easier with What To Expect The First Year, a must for parents, this updated edition includes information on immunisation, safety, childhood illnesses and much more.
What is normal development?
What should I be concerned about?
How can an Early Childhood Nurse help?
How can I make my home safe?
Can I breastfeed my adopted baby?
What if my baby is ill?
How will I cope with colic?
What if my baby has special needs?"
I'm going to include the link to a pregnancy and parenting forum that I think you will find helpful now and in the future. It's full of supportive women with boundless knowledge about these issues. I learnt so much there that I doubt I would have learnt otherwise.

What to Expect When You're Expecting is the best when you're pregnant.
But, The Baby Book by Dr. Sears is a must have book for once your child is born. Even if you don't agree with all of the attachment parenting philosophies, this book is the new parents bible.
At 2 a.m. when you're baby is crying, or breathing weird, or running a high fever, this book will give you as much peace of mind as you can have before making it to a doctor.
When you fumble through first attempts at breastfeeding twins, this is one of the only books out there that will save you.
Have I praised it enough? *smiles* Seriously, this book is an essential.

I have that book by Stoppard too :)
My very favorite, hands-down, book about caring for a baby is Dr. Sears' The Baby Book. I like it because it encourages moms (and dads) to trust in their instincts and parent from that level, rather than try to adhere to artificially imposed schedules and such.
I DO NOT like that What to Expect series... I feel it offers an incredibly narrow perspective of parenting, and that it definitely advocates parenting in ways that do not allow a mother to trust in her instincts.
Remember that YOU are the expert on your child, no one else. Any book you are turning to for parenting advice ought to acknowledge that fact, and realize that a cookie-cutter approach to parenting simply doesn't work.

I agree with Beek, The Baby Book by Dr. Sears is the best book I have found, even if you dont agree totally with his way of child rearing, it is still very imformative.

Just bear in mind when reading a book that that is one persons opinion and don't take everything literally. Babies are hardy creatures and i am absolutely sure that you'll have no problems handling it when its born. Good luck!!
