no, play dead or you'll be dead

Yes, most likely unless it is a bear that is acclimated to humans and no longer fears them...then you are just pissing him off! Or if it is a female bear with cubs she will see it as a threat to her cubs and kill you for htier lunch. Under normal circumstances if you ran at a bear yelling and screaming, the bear would run away... even a 5 lb dog can scare a healthy wild bear away.

PS this is only the black bear I have no experience with any other type of bear...

It won't work if the cub is around the mama bear!

Yelling is only useful to let the bear know you're in the neighborhood, not to try and scare the bear. DO NOT PLAY DEAD WITH BLACK BEARS. Black bears eat carrion (dead things). It is curious, and will rip you open just to see "what's inside"! Back away while facing the bear with eyes down.

If you ARE attacked by a Grizzly and can't get away, laying on the ground stomach down, with your arms underneath you, playing dead is the best defense you have.

You are in deep doo-doo if it is a polar bear: they aren't afraid of you or your yelling.

Depends on what kind of bear it is.

Polar Bear, do what you like, you're fuc&ed anyway. Everything is food to them.

Brown bear, lay on the ground face down and cover your neck with your hands. Running at them will only make them kill you, if you lay down and cover your neck they'll walk away, unless they want to eat you. They usually only attack if they're defending their personal space, which is pretty wide.

Black bear, your advice is good, they actually reguard people either as threats or food because they're not typicly much bigger than people. If they feel significantly threatened they will flee. If not you'll have a fight on your hands, one you'll likely lose.

Maybe if you some kind of super armor and you are 50 ft tall with an ever so big voicebox then yes, yes that would spook that cursed bear. If you ever watched cartoons on tv it would prove that bears are all friendly, intelligent and enjoy the occasional cuppa tea. thats what i would try. although i am somewhat backwards.

Only if you want him to eat you! They say you are supposed to make loud noises (bang pots or sticks together and make your self look large with arms and legs extended) Stay away from bear cubs at all costs. Mother bears will take your head off if she thinks they are threatened.

Black bear = maybe
Grizzly or Polar bear = you are boned, they are apex predators and only run from bigger versions of themselves.

Panda bear = you would probably cause it to have a coronary.

Koala bear = face hugger (Ask Peter Griffin)

I dont know about a bear.... but i know that it will work for a lion...
because a lion is born with natural instincts and they are used to having to chase their prey... so imagine you have to run after that big mac since the day you where born, and 1 day you come across a big mac and instead of your usual routine of chasing it, it chases you... so i think it could work.

I wouldn't run straight at the bear... that would be like a hamburger running at *you*.

I agree with the above poster... you should remain calm and still.
