As a woman, if you are travelling alone to Dubai, you do have to take some precautions. If you are planning on working in Dubai, you need to take even more precautions. The first is to be very sure about your potential employer. A government agency or employer is probably OK, but private employers or private families, especially local Arab families could be very unpleasant to work for. Good employers, like government agencies will not take your passport, and neither will the police. But many private employers will take your passport and keep it. That way, if they mistreat you or withhold your salary, you won't be able to run away to another country.
Don't even consider working as a maid for a private family. Stories about the mistreatment of maids cannot be exaggerated. It's very common for maids to get beaten, raped, or even murdered, and there is no recourse to the law. At the very least, it's common for maids not to receive their salaries, to have very poor working conditions and outrageous responsibilities, and for maids not to be permitted outdoors or away from their employers (so that they won't run away and try to complain to the police--who mostly won't do anything anyway.) Many maids who do run away are forced into prostitution because they can't get their passports back from their employers and have no other way to support themselves. And prostitution in Dubai is very bad because AIDs is rampant.
But if you find a good government employer, an agency that you feel you can trust, you might give Dubai a chance. The salary will be good, and if it's a government agency, you will actually receive the salary that is promised. In general, you will be safe on the streets during the daytimes even by yourself, but dress modestly, with knees and shoulders covered at all times. When taking taxies, always ride with Dubai transport, not private drivers, and when you find a good driver who you can trust, get his phone number so that you don't have to depend on the luck of the draw when you need a ride.

I have been a Dubai resident for more than 19 months ; and feel that this is quite a safe place for women. You will never see / hear cases of eve teasing or any other behaviorof misconduct in the public. Also , there are lot of single women working in Dubai and they generally move around uunescorted. I have never heard of Passport /Visa being taken by Police. Only if there is a criminal ooffense/ jjudicialeinquiryabout a person that the police confiscates the passport. About slavery , yeah I have "heard things" but only if people want to get into such troubles will they . The Ministry / Government is very strict here and to a certain level there is e-governance so you can even express your grievances , if God forbid , you experience such a situation. I have few female friends who are single and who are working here and have not faced any such problems. Further , in this country , even though it is Islamic , it is very cosmopolitan and mmulticultural. And women wear Western clothes without hesitation. You can see 2 women sipping coffee in a cafe ; one wearing an "abaya" , and the other wearing a mini-skirt and tee shirt!! Hope I have answered your concern satisfactorily.

You cant go there as tourist and find a job. Thats why they are very strict. They have to be strict bcos ppl land there with 1 month visa and they never return home.
Dubai is the first city to employ single women without any fuss.
Try looking for jobs right away and apply online. Find a suitable employer then land in Dubai. Else You will be in trouble with security.
Dont worry their women folk are much attractive then any other females. Dubaites are highly educated/toffee nosed.

well being from Iraq I know how those countries are! this issue is not with just women its with everybody! they DO kidnap people, it doesn't matter if your a foreigner or not! there are groups of people that do this and stuff! I wouldn't really say that in Dubai they do that as much as in Iraq or Iran! Dubai is a really rich country and they are one of the best Mid East countries! I wouldn't be really tooo much worried about it, but I would be a little protective!

I was in dubai, they dont take your passport /visa at the airport i found them to be very friendly. The security at the airport is strict but as long as you are not taking anything illegal in you will be ok. Dont know about the kdnapping but plenty of foreign females work over there. The hotel i stayed in had russians working for them and they loved it over there

I only hear the rumours from Discovery Channels and IT professionals who worked there. But according to that information Dubai is completely safe.
