Or, put simply, it what they chose. And technically, it's now QQQQ. Probably because it's otherwise easy to remember.

Actually, the QQQQ is the ticker symbol for the NASDAQ 100 Trust which is an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) that trades on the NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation).

The ticker symbols for the actual indices are:

NDX - for the NASDAQ 100
COMP - for the NASDAQ Composite

NASDAQ stock market symbol is NDAQ. QQQQ is the ETF of the largest 100 stocks traded on NASDAQ.

i would think its because they assume that they would use the least wanted ticker symbol so they didnt take nas from whatever nas is
