MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE
Known among my peers as doctor death, i have sent more gophers to meet their maker than any master gardener living or dead. every time i offer my gopher getter class for the univ, it's standing room only. one student (74 years old) caught 14 gophers within a month of taking my class. you can too.
first the myths from above.... it's JUICYFRUIT GUM, not double mint. And it had nothing to do with sticking it's mouth, or any other part together. it was thought if a gopher ate a few pieces, his system couldn't pass it, or anything else so they die. all testing by several agencys could come up with an answer. they didn't notice any change in population.

poison grain: is effective anticoagulant (bleed to death inside) as long as the gopher eats it at least 5 days in a row. if he misses a day or two all you have is a sick gopher who won't eat poison grain in the future. problem is, they seldom eat it in the first place. they will only go for the grain when they can find nothing else (fresh roots) to eat. mid winter when plants are in slow mo, some gophers may turn to grain.
now if you had your choice between a nice tender steak or a hunk of beef jerky, what would you pick? well mr gopher has a choice too. nice tender roots or dry poison grain.
moth ball & all the other stinky chasers don't work cause me gopher buries them or digs around them. an adult gopher can seal off a tunnel in 3 to 4 seconds. (another reason the garden hose never works).
no matter what grandma smith used or aunt millie said worked for her, the plain truth is.... the only proven effective way to get rid of gophers is by trapping and the best way to trap is with the new "BLACK HOLE" trap. If set correctly and in pairs, you will always get your gopher.
getting the gopher is the easy part. if you don't eliminate the tunnels you'll never get rid of your problem. you can trap uncle ed but if his tunnels remain, cousin joe is going to move in and take over.

Okay, i wont bore you with any more details. your question asks another or easier way to rid yourself of gophers. all the cute little brain storms, myths, wives-tales you have read about, are just that. they don't work.

there is NO easy way! the ONLY WAY to be rid of gophers is by trap'n & backfil'n ALL of their tunnels!

as for the second part of your question, is there another way? yes, there is another way ...... move.

My Grandparents had them really bad. They tried everything from posion to running electricity into the ground. Never could get rid of them, until they were told to try Wrigleys Doublemint Gum. No lie. They placed gum in the openings. The gophers would eat the gum, as it gets chewy they either choke on it or it sticks to everthing in their mouth. Haven't seen gohpers out there in a long time.

moth balls, put them in the runs or the mounds and they will not go there. but they will go another place close to it. so you have to be more determined than they are and keep after it. They will eventually leave. To keep them from coming back it is kind of a big job, but it can be done. you have to dig a ditch about 1 ft deep and put wire fencing in the ditch and cover it up. If they can't get under the wire they will not be able to get in.

Garden Dok is right on. I have 2 pair black hole traps & they are great. But if you don't fill tunnels after you trap the gopher they fill up again. no easy way.

if you have alot of land they can spread all over and destroy it. they can dig tunnels all over. many ranchers used to shoot them. now there are many pest companies that have a truck that is a or was used to be a sewage tank truck. they put the hose in the holes and suck them right out into the tank. i saw it on discovery channel.
