This was on here a while back. You couldn't take a lantern into the outhouse because of all of the gas in there. They were afraid the outhouse would explode so someone cut the crescent shape in the door to let light in for those late night have to goes.

Back in the day outhouses had a moon for the women's and star for the mens, but everyone wanted to use the women's because the mens where falling apart, so eventually no one used the star any more.

To let in the sunlight or moonlight, so the person going inside didn't have to be in total darkness. It is also an air passage to "refresh" the little space, but, as we all know who have been in one, they don't work well...lol.
