I'm finishing up my bachelors degree in IT with a concentration in Network Administration. My dream is to become a network administrator after I graduate. Currently, I'm a computer operator. I have been an operator since Spring of 1998. Will this help me in finding a net admin job? I noticed most network admin job postings require experience as well as cerifications, but I have neither.

From my experience, I'll have to say no. However, you do have a concentration in Network Administration which may substitute real work experience. You can always work your way up within the company that you work for now though. Maybe you can get another position higher than the one you have and you'll be a bit closer to Net Admin status. Also you should try to get some certifications while you're at it, that will give you a leg up over competition.

I don't know squat about computers, but my understanding is that people with degrees in the field do quite well. Now, while I may not know anything about information technology, I did spend 35 years managing businesses. What I want to tell you is; your degree is not a ticket to stardom. It gets you in the door somewhere. After that, it's up to you to advance. That may mean you can earn promotions where you are, or, if where you are turns out to be stagnant, stay long enough to show some stability and apply elsewhere, with the real world experience you'll have gained. Sure, your degree has merit. Just don't expect it to land you your dream job right away. Good luck.

What employer wouldn't want someone with work experience? Training is great, but experience in actually doing is always more preferable.

Now that doesn't mean that someone with a degree and no practical experience won't get the job, but given the choice, actual experience shows you've done it before and can do it again.

I've had many students who didn't work and got jobs after graduating. But those with some practical experience had it a little easier.

This is why I suggest to my students that an internship or some part-time work prior to graduation will improve your chances of getting a job afterwards.
