It is not a waste for the politicians in large urban constituencies.

The American voting public is divided almost right down the middle, so politicians are appealing to ever more narrow interest groups, hoping for whatever edge they can get.

20 years ago, the gay vote was meaningless, not because of morality, but because neither side needed those votes so badly.

Plus supporting gay causes a in the 1980's or earlier LOST votes for most politicians.

Plus as lobby groups go, the homosexual lobby is fiercely loyal to "its own". These are people whose older members remember all too well what is is like to be marginalized and attacked, so they stick close to those who stick up for them. As political fodder goes, having a bunch of dedicated urban door-knockers and callers and leaflet handers is a good deal. They are becoming as important as the church social in the heartland.

Finally, the democrats need the 6% gay popular vote to go with 18% Black vote to make up its half of all votes cast in any given election. Without these two vital groups, there is NO chance for a democratic president.

The republicans have an interest in arguing against gay issues to bring out their "outraged" constituency.

Therfore the whole issue of gay marriage gets way more attention than it should.

I believe that gays should have the same rights to marriage as straight people. It doesn't seem like a big problem. I think politicians are making this a much bigger issue than it needs to be. As long as two people love each other, and committed to each other, what else matters? It's ridiculous.

Such as what?

The WAR in IRAQ!

That's important!

Ending SOCIAL SECURITY. You honestly think you can save between $500,000 an $1 million by age 65?

How much you got now!

Letting 20 millions Mexican, most of whom are on welfare and AID with bastard out of wedlock babies become LEGAL and SING the national athem in SPANISH.

How's your Spanish, if it ain't up to snuff you don't get a job,you don't get Social Security, you lose!

Is that more important!?

Of course they are. Shocking as this may seem, politicians are constantly eager to back away from important issues - such as the ever growing welfare state - to focus on petty, partisan issues that win easy votes.

Politicians always waste time. That's their profession.

Did you notice a few weeks ago when the administration suddenly brought up the topic again, for no reason? They did it to take everyone's minds off of what they were hiding...
