At that time he just took France to their first World Cup trophy in history. He was accredited for being the best player in the tourney and won the best player award.
It also created controversy among the of the the football club he was playing at the time, FC Juventus. He was known for being a player with a good talent, but he has never really succeded to get the fans approval of him, mostly becuase of his inconsistent form. Shortly after winning the WC with France, he took alot of criticism from the Juventus fans for showing alot of football for his country while lacking to do so on the club level and questioned his passion for the club. He continued on playing with the club for 3 more years and showing the world that he was the best player to come out in the last 20 years.
While this was happening with Zidane. In 2000 Real Madrid n were having elections for a new President for the team. The running president Florentino Perez. He promised to bring the greatest player on the planet to the club. He won his presidency by bringing Luis Figo a star from the arch rivals Barcelona to the club and the year after that he was able to bring Zinadine Zidane.
Real Madrid payed Juventus 66 million euros for the transfer of Zidane. In 2001 it was a new transfer record. Juventus couldn't resist such a high price and Zidane of course wanted to play for the self proclaimed "best club in the world" .
