Gads - - do you mean John Wayne's best performance or the best film that he appeared in? One could post a solid argument for 'The Quiet Man,' it is well made, quite delightful, one of the best ensembles ever assembled for a film, certainly one of John Ford's best films. The Longest Day is one of the best war films ever made and as brief as John Wayne's performance it stands out amidst the Galaxy of stars. True Grit & Rooster Coburn work on a certain level as a sumation of his career. The Cowboys has his best death scene. North to Alaska and Seven Sinners are perhaps his most fun films. He was a grossly underated actor. Especially when one considers that he did not like horses!

Torn between The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
Both were excellent movies which should have garnered two Academy awards for John Wayne.
