Either PacMan, becuase it's so damn addicting, or DOOM. DOOM redefined a gerne and was revolutinary.

My personal favorite when it comes to RPG's would be Final Fantasy 10.
FFX just offered the full game package.
The first time I played this game, I was hooked. The storyline was amazing and offered it all. There was a lovestory, action, suspense, and interesting twists with villans that literally made me angry (especially given the fact that Seymour just never seemed to die).
The use of mini-games wasn't overdone like it was in FFX-2 and the characters themselves were badass (especially Auron). The graphics/cut scenes were awesome for when it came out, and I still play it every now and again for the hell of it.
Another few favorites:
- Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
- Shadow Hearts: From the new World
- Arc the Lad: The spirits within
- GUN

I don't suppose you actually believe there IS a "best video game ever" do you?
It would make more sense to figure out what type of game you like (strategy? RPG? FPS? adventure? puzzle? etc?) and then ask what is the best game of that particular type. Then you would get an answer you could use and that other people would find useful.

Pong. It concentrated on being simple and fun (unlike the games of today which concentrate on graphics and long load times).
