Because most of the time, it's the absolute truth. Making aspiring singers feel good isn't his job. If I decided to try out as a singer, do you think I'd need encouragement? Hell, no. I'd need someone to tell me the truth before I made a fool of myself...that I sound like a cat on crack.

Everyone needs someone like Simon in their life. Truth hurts.

Because he get`s paid a lot of money to find the next pop star/group and sentiment does not come in to it. I do`nt agree with how he treat`s most of the contestant`s but that`s life well Simon`s anyway

Simon was already rich. Any one who felt terrible was'nt Simon's
fault. They just were'nt good at taking constructive criticism.
Someone should've been truthful with them before they appeared before Simon!

He gives the show its edge - without his insults, the show would be boring. Probably in real life, he'd give more constructive criticism. Besides, they took the choice to sing on TV knowing full well the risk of being publicly humiliated for the sake of TV ratings.

it's not 'show friends', it's 'show business'. working in a creative field means you have to learn to deal with criticism, if they can't take it they won't make it very far. they can use the reality check.

while others just suck, but they don't know they suck because nobody tells them
