Formula is a great back-up. Heck, even the formula companies tell you that "breast is best" and that you should breastfeed, if you can. I feel that formula is something that should be used if supplementation is needed. Pretty simple. If a mom chooses not to breastfeed, I always wonder why. I mean, we all want the best for our babies and we all know that breastmilk is far superior to formula, so why wouldn't you unless there's a problem? Of course, there are instances when it's needed and I'm grateful that it's around for those times. If Nestle or any of the other formula making companies could make a formula that was as good as breastmilk (which they can't and I doubt will in my lifetime) I'd certainly use it. Because they can't make it, I choose not to consider it an option for my son.

I gave both my babies formula, because I had no milk to give them. I just never had any breast milk and sadly that is a condition that runs in my family. I have several family members that never had milk either. I wanted to breast feed, but couldn't so yes formula was a lifesaver for my children. I have a healthy 3 year old boy and a healthy 17 month old girl. But I also feel that it is every woman's choice as to how and what they want to feed their child. Women should not feel obligated to breastfeed if they don't want to or are uncomfortable doing it.

My son is currently 4 1/2 months old. he was born a moth early and my milk didn't come in until after we brought him home from the hospital (which was when he was 5 days old) so he's been strictly formula fed since he was born and he's very healthy. he was 5 lbs 8 oz at birth and right now he's about 16 lbs

I feel that formula is a good thing to have around in case of emergency. Thankfully I haven't had to use it, but if something were to happen to me then I know there would be something else that my baby could thrive from. Or in the case of multiples. I can't imagine nursing three or more babies exclusively!

As for the health thing. Most bottle feeders say their kid never got sick etc.. Well colds and earaches are one thing. What really benefits nurslings is in the long term. Breastfed babies have less diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, crohn's diease, allergy....the list goes on. Chances are if you're exposed to a cold virus that you haven't had yet, you're gonna get sick. Maybe your baby hasn't been exposed to a virus that was capable of getting him sick. My daughter is breast fed and has had three colds that she got over in one or two days, the same bug she had last time knocked me out for two weeks! So even if they do get sick, breastfed babies get better faster.

I formula fed both of my boys because I had to. It was physically impossible for me to breastfeed (even though I wanted to dearly! and was sick when I gave up and realized I couldn't), so I opted for formula. It was either that or death by starvation. My older son was sick quite often, but it was because he was in daycare. From birth to six months, he stayed with my sister and was never sick. From six months to 14 months, he went to daycare and got sick repeatedly. Once he was taken out of daycare, the colds, ear infections, croup, etc. stopped. I'm around sick people at work, take the train to and from work (don't even want to think about germs on there!), grocery carts, etc. and I'll have you know that neither of my boys has been sick since getting out of daycare.

I find it very hard to believe that breastfed babies who are in daycare never get sick. That's unreal and unbelievable!

My niece and nephew were formula fed - my niece was always sick and is overweight. My nephew had always been healthy but is suffering some neurological issues. My son has been quite healthy so far (not 100% but not anywhere near all the time) and he's breastfed - We'll see since he's only two. I don't think formula can be blamed for illness nor can breastfeeding be credited for good health but the chances for good health do increase if you breastfeed.

formula is a great way t give your baby the nutrition he needs> there are so many reasons to choose this over Bf and one is babies are sometimes allergic to breast milk. some mothers work long hard hours and have the option of knowing their Lil ones are well fed. could be a hygiene thing, personal comfort, anyways there are way to many to list here. it is all about what you feel is best for yours! bottom line. it is a choice every mother has and it is hers and hers alone to make!

I tried to breastfeed my twins but I couldn't keep up with their needs the doctor told me to supplement, and when I did...due to exhaustion and such I finally completely switched over. My twins were early and very low weight they are now 20 months old and healthy and tall...both are in the 75-90% range on height and weight...I think formula was fine for them...I have to tell you though when we switched to milk it was like switching to ice cream...they love the stuff.
Good Luck...I am sure your baby will be just fine

My son has been formula fed since birth, and he is perfectly healthy. He is being weaned onto milk now, and seems to be doing just fine. I have no problems with people nursing their babies if they choose to do so, I just wasn't comfortable doing it.
