Religion is not the problem.
1. The problem is rooted in greed and the search for power in the context of religion.
2. Mankind's distortion of the pure teachings of all the major religions is another root.
3. "If religion is only to be a cause of disunity it had better not exist".
Don't blame religion; blame the people who muck it up.

It is to be overcome, not forgotten.
Division isn't the problem, it's the misuse of reasoning.
We are not naturally disposed to hate each other for all time.
I'm sure there is much more affinity than those wracked by their identity in the divide care to look at.
We have to look at everything to come to the consensus we need to be human beings.
Of course when we defer power and authority, our knowledge will be controlled by the same sources. What will appear as true will be on the background of their ideology, if we cannot think from alternative perspectives. And it's not the peoples' fault this happens-- nor is it the oppressors, who are often deluded by their mistaken truth.
If the religious were taught to be critical instead of following blindly as slaughter animals do, the world would be better off. We would be more social, care for people here more. Life wouldn't be an un-understandable realm that can't be changed. Or an inevitability of class structures.

If religion wasn't the blame, there would be something else.... land, money, water, etc. It's not the religion, actually most religions are basically good and promote loving each other. It is the fanatics that twist their religion into agenda's to promote their own idealism. Don't blame the words.... blame the reader.

I agree with Tom, people would find something else. But remember religion is mans attempt to control man.
Look at some beliefs:
It is ok to be a suicide bomber because when you give up your life, you will gain heaven.
Follow the commandments...to be forgiven and reach paradise.
They control us....real faith, real belief...is pure. Not of any religion, but from within, and when you reach it...you will know it.

The world would be a worse place without religion.
I don't understand what you are thinking about.
Religion is the basis of any sanity that we have.
The Ten Commandments
http://www.christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/part3_2.html
Take a couple of minutes and read what the ten Commandments are about.
They tell you the basics for getting along with each other.
Don't steal, Don't Kill, honor your Father and Mother, you shall not commit adultery. Do not lie. Do not look lustfully at another's wife, home, car, or other goods. There are 10 Commandments not 7 Not 9, But 10.
III. OFFENSES AGAINST TRUTH
http://www.christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/eightnin.html#AGAINST
The Eight Beatitudes
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02371a.htm
The text of St. Matthew runs as follows:
* Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3)
* Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land. (Verse 4)
* Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)
* Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6)
* Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)
* Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)
* Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9)
* Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)
May you understand someday
God Bless You,

People get scared of what they don't understand. If it wasn't religion it would be colour, race, gender, sexual preferance etc......
The only thing that would make the world a better place is acceptance of difference and enjoyment of diversity.

no religion = chaos
let me explain... if you take away the idea that a higher power exists and that life on this planet is absolutely pointless, people would do whatever they wanted. without consequences of our actions we would feel no guilt. most people hold to their religion with a firm grasp. if you would take that away, there would be no point in living since there is nothing to live for.
get what i'm saying?

Probably not. People would find something else to divide themselves - like color or backround (which they do now to a lesser extent than religion).

i agree with previous answers that mankind can find something else to fight over , but it is much easier for man kind to reason with others over things he can see and understand , so my answer would be a definite yes , however one should not be so arrogant in denying people their faith , so i believe SECULARISM is the answer, ( believe what you want , but do not shove it down other people throats )
