My air conditioner & furnace were installed June 2005. It was working perfect last year, set on 68 all summer and did not see inside temp go up and it was very comfortable. this year, it was checked twice, they fixed something the 1st time (something got frozen and added freon), they still can't find anything, It is very uncomfortable inside the house. I have a split system and I noticed that if both 1 & 2 are both on the thermostat, the temp inside the house goes down really slow, like 2 degrees per hour, my PG&E bill got doubled this month. Any idea what else they can check that I think they are missing why inside temp going up so much? They keep saying we never had summer for 3 years. I stil wanna know why it's going up. Not sure if connected but I had air duct cleaned after installation.

Your unit is now 4 years old.
Wash the outdoor unit fins thoroughly with a hose and kitchen spray cleaning soap (turn off the outdoor unit power while you do this).

Clean your inside air filter and fan if it is dirty. Be sure that you have lots of air movement if the system fan is on.

If the contractor added freon without finding and repairing a leak then the refrigerant will continue to leak and become a problem once again.

A chilly 68f is colder than necessary, most have comfort in temperatures of 75f. Purchase an accurate thermometer and consider a warmer setting.

I have a suspicion that your a/c contractor is aware of a problem and he is not being entirely forthcoming. From what you describe, there is a big problem with lack of cooling b.t.u's. Either the system was grossly undersized from the outset (which doesn't make sense, because it worked well last year) or there is a major mechanical malfunction. The duct cleaning is irrelevant, or it would have shown up right away.

"Something got frozen" could have been a refrigerant leak, or it could be a plugged evaporator coil, and they simply overcharged the system to get it to operate.

Look for a trunk line that has come loose in you duct system, or a plugged evaporator coil.

Sorry I can't be more specific. Ask again with more info, please?

if your thermostat is programed wrong, you won't get proper temps. your unit needs to cycle, if its not doing that you could have a bad capacitor, the points are bad on the unit. the air handler is bad. many people replace the pump unit, but not the air handler. it will freeze up if the coils are not cleaned or you don't put air-filters in. they could have hooked the low voltage wires up wrong as your system 1 and 2 is a heat pump. in should have emergency heat on it. if not hooked up right on the thermostat wiring to the handler and pump, you will just get air as it won't cycle to cool or heat. sounds like one of those companies that rigged it up so they can come back to fix what doesn't need to be.

My air conditioner froze up due to needing a new air filter screen. It caused a frozen block to form in the a/c and we had to replace the filter and turn the air off for 24 hours to allow the ice to melt.
