Jewelry is always a great present, but instead of buying a card. Make one. A handmade card is so much more sweeter. It could be a piece of paper saying i love you and it is so much more sweeter then a card made by someone else. Girls like everything. A nice present is always appreciated. Let it come from your heart.

Well it depends on how long you're going out and how serious you both are about eachother. Remember you don't want to freak her out, but you want to show her you really care!
1) If you haven't been going out for too long, but you feel like you love her and are serious give 1) something to remind her of a special moment in your relationship (i.e. a CD of songs you listened to, a dinner at the first restaurant you went to and surprise her with champagne and flowers)
2) If you've been going out for a while and you are serious give her - jewelry that fits her style (not what store people say), a day at the spa (massage, pedicure/manicure, hairstyle) then a great dinner or even a weekend getaway at a cabin etc.
3) If she has specifically told you or made REALLY strong hints that she wants a specific item and the item is reasonable - buy that for her, and give her a card along with it telling her how much she means to you.

It really depends on the girl and knowing her tastes. Jewlery is always sentimental and personal. Something beautiful to wear tells her that she's beautiful to you. It's also something where others will ask her where she got it and she'll say great things about you. When a girl says great things about her guy to her friends, they will go - WOW! he's so nice, and she will think, "you know I've got a real gem for a guy." Something she wears will always remind her of you when she wears it.

if she is your girlfriend, i'm sure you know her likes and dislikes. give her something that she will really cherish. also, that depends on your budget. times are hard, she will understand. and if she has that much love for you, whatever you'll give her, will always be appreciated.
