i have a pond with 2 gold fish and 2 shubunkin and 2 fish that look like clown fish. ive had them for about 1-3 months and i was wondering if adding salt was a good idea. ive read that it is but i dont want to kill my fish. also 1 of my fish has sort of a growth on its right gill. should i isolate it ?

Yep put some salt in it's great for your fish :D. It kills all sorts of bacteria and nasties in the water before they can get to your fish and In the good 'ol days it was even used in high amounts as a bath to cure-all kinds of dieses. I have it permently in my fresh water tank and I reccomend you should do the same :) most aquarium's even have it in there tanks!!!. As for the growth on the fish's right gill I suggest you go see a fish doctor, as there are many things that can be. (yes you should seperate it :) just incase it's something evil and contagious.)

salt is very good for your pond, I use rock salt(ice cream salt)
at the rate of 1 lb per 150 gallons
for heavy parasite infestations I get a clean bucket fill 1/2 full of pond water and add 3 or 4 handfulls of salt dip the infected fish
in the solution till it faints, then remove to clean fresh water
as for the gill growth, I'd just watch it for now
Good Luck

You can add salt, but make sure you don't put in TOO much. And, you should probably isolate the fish with the growth, and in the tank that you put him in, add a little bit of salt to that water, too, so that he can get used to that as well.

Best of luck!

go to a pet store and find a special pond salt for ya fish. cooking and table salt has been refined all its real nutrition and will kill your fish if you do so. also, you will risk growing algea and the pond will be very smelly.
