It isn't just you. Honor, common courtesy, good manners... all seem gone now. It is such a rare pleasure to find someone, ANYONE with good manners nowadays.
No one seems to be teaching their children anything these days. That's where it all starts. In the home, when they are small.
You're right, a lot of big corporations don't believe that "the customer is always right" anymore. Everyone is too busy worrying about their OWN rights.
And going "postal' won't help. It will just get you shot, and that will be one less person out there with good manners. (although, now that I think about it, going postal isn't very mannerly)

First I must say that you need to understand that it is a fallacy to think that in some time ago things were perfect, the truth is that honor has never been a reality. From the time of knight and Samurai to the idea of cowboys waiting for the other guy to go for his gun before shooting, there has always been underhanded business in this world.
To your question, like it has always been, the only way to keep things as honest as possible is to enforce a check and balance system. You may say that it does not work but consider that in all of Europe you cannot return items like you do in the US and yet the US economy is far more prosperous overall. This shows that there is some accountability and if people truly make a commitment to spend their money where they really feel satisfied then businesses will have no choice but to bend over backwards to please the customer.

There's no such thing as honor in a profit-driven market. In fact, the sort of thing you describe has never actually existed. The only place you'll find it is on the smaller, individual level, with very small buisness owners and with bartering with people you know. You'll never change the market as a whole, not as long as it's profit driven.
A better choice is to educate yourself some more. It's not as hard as you might think. Just read. Doesn't matter (much) what you read, so much as it does that you DO read. You'll tend to learn things without knowing it.
It also helps to buy very fewer things, and to research things you want to buy before you buy them. It might seem like a bit of work, but with the internet it's fairly easy, and it does pay off.

Support independent businesses. Their owners are still idealogical and strongly believe in doing the right thing. Unfortunately, they must take on a corporate mentality if they want to survive in the long haul, so don't get too attached, the really honorable business persons usually don't last.

I don't see that it is going extinct, I see it has become a relic hidden amongst the layers of voice answering services, press this button and that pound key; I see it is buried beneath the chips of "if it doesn't accurately fit into the computer blanks, then it cannot exist, therefore I cannot be of service to you". It's not just honor that is buried and decayed amongst all of this rubbish, but truth, pride in workmanship, ethics, morals, self-respect, personal accountability and responsibility, loyalty, our nation is crumbling down around us and unfortunately we have become so blinded by our consumerism that we aren't aware that we no longer are customers - but simply consumers.

I agree that the lack of honour in the world these days is not good. I think that the best way is to be an Honourable person yourself. You are unable to change anyone but yourself. But by showing everyone else that you have honour, and integrity, you may be able to influince others to retain or try to have more honour themselves.

Hai, Sasori San.
Honor is an old way, nowadays.
It's a Shame.
But, remember "You can fool all the people for some time. Some people for all the time. But, you cannot fool all the people all the time!"
Those who do not understand this are, indeed, fools.
Dewa mata.

Find those around you that feel like you do and surround yourself with them, but also remember people are inherently sinful. It is not an excuse, I agree with you completely. I have the same problem with many merchants and companies.
