A cheese grater. It sounds silly, I know, but it works like magic. Rub on seams, the edges of pockets, the hem and the knees for nice distressing. You can use a fork as an aid if you want to pick out some of the threads of fabric for actual holes.

If you want to fade them so they look worn in places use a tiny amount of bleach - like a tablespoon disolved in a half gallon of water. (you can always add more bleach, you can never reverse the effects). And paint it on with a big brush to the areas you want distressed. Keep in mind it looks better if it's an area that normally recieves wear.

I used to keep washing them a lot in hot water and plenty of Downy in the rinse. I have also used a scrub brush on them but found most effective without wrecking them was the hot water and fabric softener. A bit of bleach can also be used but make sure it is well mixed in the tub first.

Have a friend drive a car while you get dragged behind on your bum. The would make them quite distressed alright, and perhaps you as well.

Electric sander works well to soften them, razoring pockets, cutting hems & fringing them or razoring hems like the pockets if they are the right length.

what i did is take a cheeze grater... i dont know how tough your pants are... but if they are thin then you might not want to do that... anything rough really rub back and forth on them... then also try running over them with a car a few times... i know it sounds weird but i do it all the time...
