With the annoucenment of the movie (and not anytime before, since my childhood), I have a renewed interest in the whole TRANSFORMERS universe. One thing that I can seem to find however, is a real explanation of where they came from. Who created them? How did they get their respective personalities? And more importantly, how do they transform into vehicles and weapons that are used on earth (porsche's, pistols, and mack-trucks), if they are from another planet or dimension?

brainiac is right. the transformers came from cybertron.

when the autobots' ship (Teletran One) crashed on earth, it searched automatically for machines native to the planet, and kindof re-configured/remodelled the unconscious robots into vehicles according to existing models (mack trucks, VW Bug, all-terrrain jeep, and even an ambulance).

i'm not sure how it happened with the decepticons.

Transformers, The Movie reveals a lot of Cybertron history. You want to borrow my DVD? I have to watch it again.
