very intresting question..... I think that all of the segnificant inventions revolutionizes their category. For example the helicopter, we are all used to it and we couldn`t imagine life without it. Since the invention of the piloted helicopter, people used it to save lives(hospitals), to destroy lives(army) or just for having fun. Another good example is the computer. Before the invention of the computer, people all over the world struggled with a lot of paperwork and it was very hard for them to comunicate with each other. So my opinion is that no one can decide which invention is the most important because every invention is the most important for the domain it was made for.

My fathers although it has not been patented or licensed or even copywrited yet due to the fear of death from many branches of governments, and oil co.'s. So all in all any invention that ticks off that many in power and will automatically put you in all of their top secret security files has to be worth it. Not to mention the fact that everyone would save at least $500-$2000 a month if it ever got made.

the quantum description of the atom.
I vote for this because pretty much all of our modern technology results from our new understanding of matter and because it seems like all major future technological advancements will stem from an elaboration of this theory.
What technologies am I talking about: nuclear reactions, nanotechnology, biotechnology, computers, new quantum computers, new sources of energy, superconductors, etc etc etc ad infinitium.
Also remember that pretty much all of modern chemistry (and thus all of your modern consumer products and materials and electronics) arose from the quantum description of the atom.
