Four quarts for the engine and oilpan PLUS you want to change the oil filter at the same time, making a 5th quart.

O.K. Automotive 101. Firest of all a Long Block is one step from becoming a complete engine. Most all Chevy v-8's require 5 QTS. of oil, this usually includes the filter. There are a few like the new 5.3 litre that can require 6Qts.

As a standard installation, with a full-sized filter, five is customary. With the smaller filter, four + whatever the filter requires is customary. With a HD oilpan, seven is the rule. On a fleet vehicle, five-plus, sometimes to six or six and one half. For racing applications making use of a luberefiner, the capacity is usually seven +whatever the capacity of the add-on is. The point is: No less than four plus whatever the filter requires, then topped-off to the full mark on the dipstick after a run-in. Hope it helps.

5 qts is the counseled volume. however, once you regulate oil with a sparkling filter out, you should position in the counseled volume and then start up and run the engine for a jiffy to proper off the hot filter out. Then, verify oil element on dipstick and proper off as needed.

I think Matt is right, but I'd put 4 in, start it up until the oil light turns off and then check the dipstick.

depends on how deep your oil pan is. Park on level groud and keep pouring and use the dipstick. Don't overfill.
