If it's based on a novel, read the book.

For an anniversary a couple of years ago, I got my wife the book "The Notebook" then took her to see the movie. It made the movie more meaningful because you knew the story.

Then there are movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" that made absolutely no sense if you didn't read the book first.

it depends on the cast, direction, writing, script writing, locations, editing ,and handling of the subject, on which the film is based. music is also an integral part of the movie, especially background music. if it is not suitable, it can marr the beauty, and the impact. then there are other imp. aspects, like costumes, settings, sets, if it is a period film. some movies take years to complete.
it should be also taken into account, the target crowd in mind, for example, children. but there are some movies, like animated, appealing to children, as well as adults, like finding nemo, lion king, beauty and the beast etc.
according to me, a movie should have style and substance, to amke it an all-time favorite, like gone with the wind, casa blanca, a clock-work orange, china town, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, to name a few. these movies have never lost their charm, and considered mile-stones, in the history of cinema !

Stay away from cliches. I'm so sick of the cinderella story bullshit and the recycled chick flick plots, even some worked into otherwise great action movies, that I could bathe in the blood of the unworthy.

A pre-movie cocktail, a post-movie meet-the-stars session, and getting vip red-carpet treatment as a guest for the gala event. Who cares what the movie is about.
