I don't think there are any hard statistics on how many gay Americans there are. There are a couple of problems with the question. We don't know how many people are actually gay because many people are in the closet, and so the number of openly gay Americans only indicates that, how many are in the open. Further with the problem of identity is whether or not this includes bisexuality. I've known some people in my life who claimed to be gay, but would be more appropriately called bisexual (it's hard to accept someone as gay if they're having liasions with the opposite sex as well).
10 percent is an oft-quoted figure, but it's a figure that was culled from the Kinsey Report, and decades later, it's hard to know if that still rings true. Could be more, could be less. Hard to say. I would say though, it's probably anywhere between 2-15 percent, depending on your prerequisites.

How many gay people are there in the world? 10 percent? 5 percent? 1-2 percent?
10 percent is the number quoted most often. But is that for both male and female? At 10 percent that means there are 600,000,000 gay people in the world
At 5 percent that means there are 300,000,000
1-2 percent is the number used by conservatives but even that means there are 60,000,000 - 120,000,000 gay people.
Anyway you think about it, that is a lot of ******* people. So where are they? I mean really. Where do you hide 60 million gay people? Where is this closet the size of a nation? Where are they and why aren't they flexing their political muscle? Why aren't they working for gay causes?
Let's put the numbers into perspective...
Soon there will be 300 million people in the United States. At 10 percent that would be 30 million gays. At 5 percent that would be 15 million gays, at one percent that would be 3 million. Where are these people?
There are 3 million people in Phoenix the fifth largest city in the U.S. 10 percent is 300 thousand. 5 percent is 150 thousand. 1 percent is 30,000. Even at 1 percent that is a small town.
There are 10 thousand employees in my company. That is 1000, 500 and 100 respectively. Where are these people?
There are 2000 people in my department. That is 200, 100, and 20 respectively.
There are 100 people in the building where I work. That is 10, 5 and 1 respectively. I know where the 1 is.

I have no reason to believe the percentage varies from one country to another - except, unfortunately, in the countries where merely being gay gets you the death penalty.
I don't know what the percentage is. The popular 10% might include bisexuals. At any rate, there are a lot more gay people than most straight people realize because straight people (who don't have gay friends) only notice the most stereotypical ones.

A man named Kinsey did a BIG study. Lots and LOTS of people fall in between 100 percent straight & 100 percent gay.
So how many same-sex experiences is "gay"??? See the problem with the label is that it isn't just about sex. And there's another problem: people wander around and cross the line and break their labels. ALL. THE. TIME.
If, one day, everyone who'd ever had a physical relationship with someone of their gender HAD to stand up all at once, we'd all be AMAZED.

It has been formally stated that 20% of people are gay, however not all that 20% are practising gays. It's esimated about half, just think if you have 4 friends then one of the five is gay, "you of course", if you have 10 friends then 2 of them are gay, "you and one other". Hey here's another thought, if there's 10 men on an anti-gay committee, then 2 of em are gay, just think of the hipocracy in the world.

i'd might want to say no... the most vocal of route are those that oppose it, or are intimidated by using what they don't realize. that is what you're used to listening to and seeing. although there are a huge variety that do not consider gay marriages, maximum are "stay and enable stay", as far as being gay typically. "to each their own" may be yet another cliche. that could prepare. i'm a republican, married, heterosexual, and that i do no longer consider gay marriages, although I completely help civil unions. Homosexuals do no longer have their orientation as a decision (possibly some, yet no longer maximum), so why stigmatize them. they're nonetheless contributing individuals of society, and must be dealt with as such.

Unfortunately there will never be an exact number. With being gay/lesbian in the open being critisized those who are not out, they wouldn't admit to it. How many "straight" people have had sex with the same sex and then deny that they have done it. It also works with those who have not come out yet. Just remember back to when you were in the closet, and if you were asked about being gay/lesbian...you denied it!

Estimated 10% of all population as a stated quote. However; that's 10% of openly gay individuals; which doesn't address the 90% closeted gays worldwide.

I believe the "official numbers" are about 10%..but from my personal experience it's much higher all over the world.
as far as Gargs reply goes..maybe he had better take another look around him...gay people can also be invisible and also married and any other number of disguises...believe me 10% in my company is a low number.
