(1) Ancient version:

According to Critias, the Hellenic gods of old divided the land so that each god might own a lot; Poseidon was appropriately, and to his liking, bequeathed the island of Atlantis. The island was larger than Libya and Asia Minor combined, but has since been sunk by an earthquake and became an impassable mud shoal, inhibiting travel between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Egyptians described Atlantis as an island approximately 700 km across, comprising mostly mountains in the northern portions and along the shore, and encompassing a great plain of an oblong shape in the south

According to Critias, 9,000 years before his lifetime, a war took place between those outside the Pillars of Hercules and those who dwelt within them. The Atlanteans had conquered the Mediterranean as far east as Egypt and the continent into Tyrrhenia, and subjected its people to slavery. The Athenians led an alliance of resistors against the Atlantean empire and as the alliance disintegrated, prevailed alone against the empire, liberating the occupied lands. “But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all the warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea." Plato claimed it was somewhere outside the Pillars of Hercules, now known as the Strait of Gibraltar.

(2) Modern version:

Francis Bacon's 1627 novel The New Atlantis describes a utopian society, called Bensalem, located off the western coast of America. A character in the novel gives a history of Atlantis that is similar to Plato's, and places Atlantis in America. It is not clear whether Bacon means North or South America.

"Plato described Atlantis as a beautiful island that went under the waved back in 350 BC. He said it took a day and a night to sink and that it was made up of engineers and architects. This island was made up of palaces, docks, temples and harbors. The city was built on a hill and surrounded by rings of water which were connected to tunnels that were large enough for ships to sail through. On the outskirts of the city were the farms for the cities food supplies. Past that were mountains were the wealthy lived. Pluto went into great detail on the amazing building complete with hot and cold water fountains, shared dining halls and stone walls inlaid with precious metals. In the 1800's an American, Donnelly, wrote a book about Atlantis that became a best seller and he studies floods in Egypt and Mexico because he believed Pluto was writing from an actual natural disaster. Since then many books and many theories arose many of which have no basis."
"Atlantis - Facts And Fiction
The most believable theory about Atlantis came from the Greek archaeologist Angelos Galanopoulos in the late '60s. He theorized that around 1500 BCE, a massive eruption from a volcano ripped apart the island of Santorini in the Mediterranean and probably wiped out most of the civilization on the Greek islands and regions of Greece. Angelos suggested this disaster is the one that sank Atlantis. If this is so, then he must have his dates wrong - or does he? He reasons that when the story was being translated, the Egyptian symbol for 100 (a coiled rope) was mistaken for the symbol for 1000 (a lotus flower). This changes the date from 9000 years ago to 900 years ago. The only thing wrong with this explanation is that Plato specifically said the city was near the Pillars of Hercules, which are thought to be nowhere near Greece. Where Could Atlantis Be?
The exact location of the lost city of Atlantis has been questioned by many people, like British Royal Air Force photo interpreter J.M. Allen. He is convinced Atlantis is in Altiplano, near the Andes Mountains, in Bolivia. The famous psychic channeler Edgar Cayce believed the remains would be found off the coast of Florida near Bimini Island. Other people think it's lost somewhere in Central America, the China Sea or Africa. Others believe that Atlantis is nothing more than a myth."

noone knows for certain. The ancient citystate of the minoans are thought to be the atlantans of yore, and they are in the eastern med.

however, that does not jive with the homeric and sophic placement of the continent beyond the straight of gibralter.

The Appalachian mountain chain is the same exact chain that runs through ireland and scotland. along the way, the mountain chain is buried under the atlantic ocean. some people believe that where the chain plateaus is where atlantis was.

hope this helps

Over 11,000 years ago there existed an island nation located in the middle of the Atlantic ocean populated by a noble and powerful race. The people of this land possessed great wealth thanks to the natural resources found throughout their island. The island was a center for trade and commerce. The rulers of this land held sway over the people and land of their own island and well into Europe and Africa.
