I totally agree, I'd like to see a similar format to the with the 2 division winners with the best winner recieving byes, while the other division winner and the three second place teams play a best of 3 opening round. To get these series' done quickly, I think The division winner and the top wild card should host all three games against thier opponents and play a night game for game one, a day game the next game for game two, and a double header if neccasary the day after that. From there, I'd leave operate the playoffs like normal.
I'd like to see the teams that are bunched up in the upper-middle of the standings slug it out against otherwise fringe playoff teams. At the same time, this really priveleges the best two teams in the regular season, and hearkens back to the golden era of baseball when only two teams made the league's championship series. I feel like if your a good team, but not a great team, you should have to work harder to prove yourself. It would be a long time before one of the wildcard teams in the short series makes it all the way to the fall classic, but it would be great drama in the meantime, and it would be fun to hear the 3rd division winner whine about not getting respect.

I agree with Mr. Porgie. The baseball playoffs as they stand are great. The addition of the wildcard has allowed some races to remain interesting, instead of one team running away with the division lead before the all-star break, and 3/4 of the teams playing out the string, or having fire sales.
No more series in the playoffs, or they'll be playing on Thanksgiving! or in the snow!

One of the things I love most about baseball is that the regular season means something. You play 162 games, and then only 4 teams make the playoffs from your league. There are no ridiculous tie-breakers like you see in the NFL. There aren't a ton of undeserving teams serving as little more than warm-ups for the better teams.
I hope they leave it as it is.

How would the extra teams, 2 extra from each league, be decided? Would it be the top two from each division? Or the top from each league and 3 wildcards? I don't know. Sounds kinda crazy. Not every team can make the playoffs. That's just how it is.

NO NO NO!
The playoffs are just fine the way they are.
Baseball is a very unique sport, and trying to make it like football only takes away from it's charm.

nope...its been like this for a while now...why fix what aint broken? If you change the playoff system, you virtually eliminate division rivalry and the need for a trading deadline...It basically becomes who can win the most, and not who can win the most when it counts!

that sounds like a terrible idea
the format is great the way it is now, no need to change it, because then it could be like basketball and hockey where teams with a below .500 record could make it.
