To encroach or violate the rights of another.

You probably hear the term most often in the context of copyright infringement. Copyright infringement is any act which violates the copyright held by someone else, such as copying or selling a copyrighted book or song without permission or paying for it.

In a legal context, an infringement refers to the violation of a law or a right. This includes:

* copyright infringement
* patent infringement
* trademark infringement

infringement is usually used in the copyright sense, and it means to do something that is in violation of (infringes on) the copyright of another.

for example, downloading an MP3 from limewire is copyright infringement, because only the copyright holder has the right to make a copy of his or her work, and by downloading a copy for yourself without permission, you have infringed on that holder's right.

Its sort of like "trespassing" but not in a physical sense, more of an "intellectual property" sense. It could be stealing someone else's idea, or taking credit for someone else's ideas.
