I think most Arabs and Persians are Muslim. I understand Muslim is a religion (Islam) and the others are ethnic in nature....but what distinguishes one from the other? THANKS!

Ignore Jimmy H and listen to the biologist.

Anyhoo, the major ethnic group from Libya to Iraq is the Arabs. From Iran to Afghanistan, its the Persians.

To the north, you've got Kurds and Turks. Again, totally different ethnic groups. West of Libya, you've got Berbers, which are yet another ehtnic group.

Persians come from Persia, known as Iran to most Americans. The also speak Farsii, not arabic. They have an indigenous religion, Zoroastrianism (consists of a good god and an evil one). Arabs are a different ethnic group. They are united by a common language (Arabic, but there are regional differences) and culture. Many Arabs are muslims. Arabs before Islam had a polytheistic (or was it animistic?) religion.

sort of by ethnic group, but more like ethnic group collections (ie, Arab include Egyptians, Afghans, etc. and Persian include Iranians and Jews and Turks who live in Iran)

I think, but I could be wrong, that Arab is the name of the entire group, like whether you're irish, german,or swedish you are still white. So whether you're persian, lebonese or even indian(as in actual indian, not native american) people will consider you Arab. Don't quote me on this because I'm just guessing, I don't really know for sure.
