Although most people would probably say Animal, I'd like to offer an opinion from off the beaten path.
I think Sweetums is the "ultimate" muppet. He's a gray, mean-looking muppet standing well over 6-feet tall with what looks like a carpeted trap door for a mouth. Yet, when he gets a chance to actually say something, you find out he's a big softie. He should have gotten way more air time.

Gotta be Kermit, he's one of the originals first put on the air nationally by Jack Paar way back around 1963, so he's been around for ever and everyone knows him. He's the "everyman," the muppet equivalent of Jimmy Stewart or Tom Hanks.

Zoot, because he give props to the classic jazz artists that influenced the format so much. That is probably the only aspect of the show that has a level beyond what everyone sees on the surface.

It has got to be Miss Piggy. She has been in so many commercials and she is hard to forget. I love the Pizza Hut one where she and Jessica Simpson are spatting.
