buy ant traps and put them around by every door and every other frequent-ant-visitor place. do not let small children get near them because they do contain poison. wipe your counters and floors with plain white vinegar and let it dry without rinsing, they don't like to walk on it.

you can get ant traps at wal mart, etc

Follow them to the source of where they came in the house and place ant killers there. They contain ant poison and aren't just a quick-fix like the sprays. After that, you need to go outside and start figuring out how they're getting in. Then, put some outdoor ant killer things there.

Since I did that, I haven't had a problem (6 months ago)...

Ortho Home Defense Indoor/Outdoor spray works wonders! It's about $6 at Walmart. Remove everything from where you're going to spray, saturate area, then after a few mins., barely wipe area with a rag, with NO soapy water or anything else, just the rag. Wait 'til area is completely dry, then replace items. It'll deter the ants and they'll stay away from the area treated.

Ants do not like the feel of chalk. You can draw a chalk line(which can be easily cleaned) where ants come in the house. They will not cross the chalk. If that doesn't work and you cannot afford an exterminator, use "Ant Terror' or "Bug Stop".
These products can be purchased at Walmart.

Splenda,Splenda, Splenda this is a sugar substance found in the grocery stores in the sugar aisle. Put it in front of your doors, windows and any other sources that they can get in. For example pour some outside near some ants they will die. Believe me I have done so and it works.
