They look at me like I'm crazy and then they proceed to give me this look of pity like they think I have a death wish or something. What's the deal?

It could be that . . .

1. (please don't take offense to this) You are totally unprepared to be an astronaut and the people that know you can't possibly imagine you as an astronaut.

2. They are ignorant about what being an astronaut involves and rely off of some senseless, video-game based idea of what it must be like.

3. Misconceptions about space and space travel. You should read Arthur C Clarke's On the Exploration of Space, or recommend it to them.

If you are serious about becoming an astronaut, you should know that
1. it requires graduate science education (at least masters)
2. becoming an officer in the air force (unless you have a collection of high speed planes to practice with)
3. an incredible character and dedication, etc.

I hope you do become one. Space travel is under-appreciated and will one day become a vastly important part of our industry.

I think they do that because a lot of thins have happened in the past with astronauts but don't let those looks get you down because when I say I want to be Singer people give me the same look. As if I am crazy but I 'm not I just want to follow my dreams and so do u so when some one gives you that look again ask them is there some thing you have to say or did you just eat something real bad

When my sister was in middle school, I told her all about how wonderful college was (I was in my first year of college) well let me tell you, my mom had a little talk with me and told me my sister was not as bright as me and I shouldn't build her hopes too high. Well, after my sister graduated from college, she went on to college, and she got a nursing degree. She decided that wasn't what she wanted to do and went back and got a technology degree. Then, she met a wonderful man and they had four very bright children. He owns an office supply store, so she decided she would home school them through their preschool years until it was time for first grade, then made sure that they had her tutoring after school. She tells her children they can do anything they want if they put their mind to it and my mom is still in shock that she accomplished so much. Of course, my mom told me I had no patience and would make a worthless parent and now she watches me with my disabled child and tells me she does not understand, I am the most patient parent. (I admit when I was young, I thought everyone was like me, It was about working hard. I really am not that smart, I just had a lot of confidence. I mean come on I made a 16 on my ACT and like a 650 on my SAT. I made an 825 on my GRE. But I have a Masters with a 3.75, so it's really what you put into life and not what others think of you.) Go for your dream!

Because most people think there are invisible boundaries on their life which tells them they can't be an astronaut or a rockstar or a NASCAR driver or the president. They confine themselfs to boring mundane ordinary lives.

If you want to be an astronaut, by all means, persue it. The chances you'll be picked are slim, but someone has to be one.

Because a very small percentage of people actually become astronauts. It's like saying you want to become a rock star.

I think wanting to become an astronaut is an excellent ambition.

I for one encourage you to follow your dream. Study hard, work hard, and always be fair.

It is a noble aspiration. Go for it!

Because misery loves company and people can't stand the fact that your ambitions go far beyond their imaginations. Follow your dreams, work hard, and leave the rest up to God, or whatever spirtual being that you have faith in.
