It cannot do both.
If the HD has a big connection wih lots of pins, that is IDE so use that.
If it is a small connection with 2 little grooves (empty) then that is SATA, so use that.
If it is an old HD, it will be IDE, so my guess would be to use that.

If you've got sata connectors on your new Motherboard and a sata drive, that's all you needs. Sata's a new kind of connector, it's a slim cable, not a ribbon like IDE.
On most drives you can use an old-style power cable, or if the connectors are there, you can have a SATA power cable as well.
It should show up on the BIOS when you boot.

Use the IDE cable, the drive does not have SATA on it if it is IDE.

convinced, you may used a similar cable. however, in case you intend on utilising both the IDE HD and CDROM jointly, make confident you position the right carry close/slave configuration utilising the jumpers.

If you have a PATA hard drive (hdd), then your stuck using the IDE cable.
