I am preparing the setup program.. in which my need is to identify the SQL Server version and edition...before starting the Setup..

as a pre-installation requirement..

Is there any APi or method available through which we can identify the Version and Edition of SQL server?

Check the Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\CurrentVersion

If this key is not present it means SQL Server is not present on the machine.

If Present then Check 'CurrentVersion' Value under this node
It gives the Current Version Of SQL Server.
This will definitely help
