I loved watching Trigun (bought the box set) and was debating whether or not to start reading the mangas. There's so many of them and that runs into a lot of $

The manga series is a lot of fun and has a bit more to the story than the anime.
Most public libraries have manga, now, so, I'd suggest trying to borrow some from a library or a friend before you spend the money.

Good luck!

I imagine it's like any other book and movie combination. Some movies follow the book so much that reading the book just shows more of the reasoning behind the movie action. Some movies get side-tracked, or go off on their own direction, and reading the book is like reading about people with the same names who are not the same people as the ones in the movie.

I don't know how well the Trigun series followed the mangas.(or vice versa)

If you liked Trigun the animated series, then yes. I believe they're worth getting into. But, don't just trust anyone with your hard earned money. Buy and read one and see if you like it.
