I have since made this account right, it was years ago, but it has stayed on my record. I know because when I wanted to open a new account, the bank called and this old account came up. Is there any number I can call to find out how long this is on my record for? I have a receipt that I paid the original bank. It has been 6 years. This is frustrating.

Goto the bank and get the address and phone number of the company who has te block on you. Mail them a copy of the payment proof via certified mail with return receipt include all your account information and requst for them to remove the negative record. If they fail to do so contact your bank's legal department and ask them what can be done.

Contact the bank again and ask them how long they keep the account's information active.

If necessary, provide them a copy of the proof that you have.

VERY IMPORTANT.....go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get a copy of one of your credit reports.

If this was a 'chargeoff' it will come off your record eventually, but you need to make certain you continue making timely payments on all your other accounts in the meantime.

You've got one more full year to go, minimum. Some keep it on file for 10 years.
